LOCATION: GMPDC, Manchester School of Technology

ATTENDEES: Liane (host), Gary, Rob, Justin H, Donna, Kathy

Our first meeting at this beautiful facility. Laptops available, overhead projection.

Welcome to new attendee, Rob. Door prize won by Gary: Barrie North's Joomla 1.5 User Guide.

Show & Tell: Members presented sites they've been working on.

Liane - http://gmpdc.org/
  • Modified default Purity template - renamed to "JA Hackity" so it wouldn't be overwritten by core upgrades - likes it for its collapsible modules
  • Justin suggested to Liane that with 22 schools in Manchester School District to hold out for 1.6 with many user controls, run from one database and 22 templates
  • Tips:
    • how to create a menu item that's not really a link - External Link menu type & enter # for the URL address
    • To make drop down menu - module mgr -> main menu -> always show submenu items -> change to Yes

Gary: http://goffstown.k12.nh.us/SAU19/

  • Goffstown 5 schools converted to joomla; named "Grizz", customized the default Beez template
  • Each school uses a separate database
  • uploaded CSV file of usernames/pws - userport (component) - then tie it to active directory server - Plugin Authentication LDAP
  • GCal - using google calendars
  • Tips:
    • Superadmin - Justin point about getting rid of "admin" as default super - hackers know that user #62 in an install is always the superadmin.
    • Steps
      • create a new user account for yourself and give superadmin access
      • log out, and log back in to superadmin account
      • change access level for default admin to registered and block user

* Daily Bulletin in an i-frame
* Faculty and Staff listing- static page
* Joomie - will allow html coded text to be recognized as you entered it and not trying to clean it up.
* JCE Editor is a little more flexible (comment from Justin)
* Give depts ownership to their sections of the sites
* Article Attachments - also inline pdfs using JCE editor upload to media manager
